中国云锦因其绚丽多彩，美如天上云霞而得名，至今已有一千多年的历史。南京云锦与成都的蜀锦、苏州的宋锦并称“中国三大名锦”，并位于三者之首。
中国云锦源于宋朝的彩锦，兴盛于元、明、清三朝，其三朝统治者相继在南京设立官办织造局督造云锦。从元朝开始云锦一直作为宫廷御用品。《红楼梦》作者曹雪芹就诞生于云锦世家，其祖父、曾祖父曾掌管云锦织造局达65年之久，康熙皇帝六次下江南，五次驻驿于云锦织造局。可见他对云锦的重视程度。
中国云锦工艺复杂，至今仍沿用大花楼木织机由提花工和织手两人上下配合织造而成。每天仅能织5-6cm，故被喻为“寸锦寸金”；中国云锦工艺独特，至今无法用机器替代，在织造过程中大量使用金线、银线、孔雀羽、高级丝绒等名贵材料，
故享有“东方瑰宝”“中华一绝”的美誉；中国云锦的工艺至今靠手传口授，代代相传。
中国云锦的主要品种有“织金”“库锦”“库缎”“妆花”四大类，主要用于皇帝龙袍，皇后凤衣，嫔妃霞披及宫廷的坐褥、靠垫、枕等装饰。
现今，中国云锦已申报为世界人类口头与非物质文化遗产。

Originated from Song Brocade of Song Dynasty, it was chosen to be the royal tribute in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties and was woven under the supervision of the Textile Bureaus established in Nanjing. Nowadays, Yun Brocade is still being woven by the traditional wooden loom which is 5.6m long, 1.4m wide and 4m high and must be operated by two craftsmen manually. This cannot be substituted by modern machines. Each piece of Yun Brocade requires superior level of quality and the weaving techniques are so complicated that the output is only 5-6 centimeters per day. So Yun Brocade is described as "An inch of gold for an inch of brocade", "Oriental Jewel" and "Wonder of China".
Yun Brocade weaving technique is one of the most precious intangible cultural heritages of China and even in the world. It is a great gift for memory and for collection.
